Will Iraq opposition hurt Democrats?

At least one liberal has figured out that Democrats are in a quagmire when it comes to Iraq. Matthew Yglecias writes in the American Prospect that, "Democrats need to devise a unified political strategy on Iraq before Republicans box them in." Sorry, Matt - it's already too late.

Even before the Republican National Committee launched its "White Flag" ads that pegged Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry as "retreat and defeat" Democrats, the party was suffering a significant lack of credibility on military, defense and security issues. Three years ago, only the far-Left wing of the Democratic Party opposed the war in Iraq, but the radical base has successfully demanded that the leadership begin to spout the same defeatist rhetoric. No matter what the polls say about their attitude toward the war in Iraq, Americans believe Democrats to be weak.

This is a dilemma for the Democratic Party since only a defeat of U. S. forces in Iraq could result in a positive political outcome for it. Each day Democrats pretend to support the troops while they do everything they can to undermine their morale and the support of the American people.

The template that the Democrats use is the Vietnam War. But the situation in Iraq has gone beyond the point where Democrats in Congress were able to ensure an American defeat there by voting to cut off the funds necessary to continue to wage war. On Thursday, Iraqis head to the polls in the third election of 2005. It will be three more democratic elections than the people of Vietnam have been able to participate in since the United States left in 1975.
