Questionable sources in NY Daily News
Tom DeFrank of the New York Daily News has the most amazing sources at the White House who tell him the most amazing things. The problem is that all of it comes from unnamed sources. The liberal New York tabloid wants its readers to believe that it has close contact with some very chatty White House insiders. It doesn't.
Today's fantasy is about Rumsfeld's rumored departure from the Pentagon. While it may be possible that Rummy is looking for a good time to leave after a very long hard slog, DeFrank asserts a source told him that, "Bush has told friends that Rumsfeld is a political liability."
This is absolutely false. President Bush doesn't believe that and he certainly wouldn't say it if he did. The story was full of quotes, but not a single one of them named except for an official spokesperson.
DeFrank's "reporting" is the mostly wishful thinking about a White House in trouble as portrayed in a November 27 article. On November 8, it reported that the once close relationship between the President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney had soured. More quotes from unnamede sources, but no evidence. In fact, the coordinated efforts between the two to push back against the "retreat and defeat" Democrats and their Old Media amplifiers (like the New York Daily News) suggests exactly the opposite.
This guy might be the next Jayson Blair.
