Friedman spouts elitism at NPC
Tom Friedman, a Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for the New York Times appears to be a well-informed fellow about the Middle East, but suffers from the same self-delusion that afflicts his colleagues at the Old Grey Lady. On Monday night he appeared at the National Press Club in a one-on-one interview by Marvin Kalb.
In response to questions about media bias, he strongly defended the Old Media and took a few gratuitous swings at Fox News. He listed news organizations that he believed to report without bias, specifically excluding Fox News, while including CBS and CNN as well as his own newpaper.
He later made a comparison between al-Jazeera and Fox News suggesting that both were "fair and balanced" from a particular political point of view.
One interesting tidbit for the journalism purists: Friedman confessed that he had no journalism training whatsoever except for a single 10th grade class. He was hired as a reporter after submitting an editorial piece to the Des Moines Register.
