Eugene McCarthy: The Original “Cut and Run” Democrat
The death of former Sen. Eugene McCarthy on Saturday of has given the Old Media another opportunity to resurrect more Vietnam War images. They paint him as a man of conscience who broke with the leadership of the Democratic Party to oppose American involvement in Southeast Asia in 1968. The comparisons with the war in Iraq will be inevitable.
The original “cut and run” Democrat will be memorialized in Washington, DC at an event that will probably be more of an antiwar rally, in the same style at the Paul Wellstone memorial in 2002. It will be interesting to see which Vietnam War – era relics attend. Walter Cronkite, Daniel Berrigan and Jane Fonda should be expected along with the new class of antiwar activists that include the weepy Cindy Sheehan. MoveOn.org might even run a video tribute.
I welcome such an event, as it will underscore what the McCarthy legacy is. The “peace candidate” who ran for president in 1968 put the Democratic Party on path of weakness from which it has never returned. He was a member of the “blame America” crowd until the end. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, McCarthy said that the United States should have paid more attention to the “plight” of the Palestinians.
Sen. Edward Kennedy led off the politicized tributes to McCarthy in a statement saying, "I admired Gene enormously for his courage in challenging a war America never should have fought…His life speaks volumes to us today, as we face a similar critical time for our country."
